Certification

All KGHA teams are required to have a certified trainer.  The mandatory level 1 trainer course introduces the participant to the principles of injury and risk management. This year, trainers are asked to complete the e-learning course available online.  The course takes approximately six hours to complete.

NEW 2016:  Once the course is complete, the certificate and pocket card are to be kept as your official certification.  There is no longer a requirement to submit your certification to OWHA to obtain a trainer card.

OWHA requires a standard first aid certification for all level II trainers.  The minimum qualification for obtaining status as Level II certified trainer is a Standard First Aid card from a recognized first aid provider group. The first aid card must also be valid for the entire hockey season (September to April). Expiration dates will vary according to the guidelines established by the first aid provider.

Individuals with certain medical qualifications are able to apply for HTCP Level II status once they have successfully completed the Level I program: Medical Doctor, Registered Nurse, Occupational Health Nurse, Physical Therapist, Athletic Therapist (CATA C.), Ambulance Attendant, Paramedic, Chiropractor, Physiotherapist, Dentist, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Podiatrist and Military Medic (all qualifications must be licensed in Canada).

To maintain their level II status, first aid or medical qualifications must be kept up to date and this information must be submitted to OWHA prior to the expiry date.  If information is not submitted on time, the level I certificate course must be taken again.

KGHA will be accepting standard first aid training from Red Cross certified organizations (and go to 'find a course in your area').

To upgrade to a trainer II certificate after you have received your first aid training, complete the OWHA form and, along with a copy of copy of your first aid certification, email to info@owha.on.ca.

A copy of the certificate provided by the OWHA should then be sent to the Risk and Safety Coordinator.

Trainers will be reimbursed for the level I online course and the first aid certification.  Certificates must be submitted along with the following form to the Finance Manager.
