DEVELOPING GREAT COACHES

Concussion Awareness Training for Coaches & Trainers
All head coaches and trainers are required to complete the “Making Headway - Concussion Awareness” (generic) module. The “Making Headway” module is offered online by the Coaching Association of Canada. This free module can be accessed at any time and will take 60 to 90 minutes to complete. Please access the module at http://coach.ca/concussion-awareness-s16361 . The module is recognised by the NCCP and will count as five points toward your coaching re-certification. All head coaches and trainers are asked to provide proof of completion to their respective Vice-Presidents. Further, it is highly recommended that all assistant coaches and den mothers (as they spend a lot of time with the players) complete the module.

Deadline for Coach Qualifications - Season Start

Beginning with the 2015-16 season, the ODWHA implemented a new policy whereby all coaches must have their required qualifications in place BEFORE they are permitted behind the bench during league play. Please make alternate arrangements for coverage through your KGHA VP should you not have the required qualifications to be behind the bench for your team. If you are still at all unsure what qualifications are required for yourself or your assistant coaches, please consult the links below, or e-mail either the VP Risk & Safety or the Development Coordinator.

For KGHA house league requirements, all team officials (head coaches, assistant coaches, trainers) must have achieved their required qualifications and submitted supporting documentation to the VP, Risk & Safety no later than December 1 of the current season.

Coaching Requirements
The OWHA released new coaching qualifications beginning with the 2015-16 season. If you are an existing or prospective coach, please review the PDF files found on the OWHA website (link below) to ensure you have a plan in place to achieve your required certifications and other qualifications.

OWHA Coaching Clinic

The OWHA will be running coaching clinics in various districts. Please visit their website here for the list of available clinics: http://owha.pointstreaksites.com/view/owha/coaches/nccp-clinics

Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) also hosts NCCP clinics, which our coaches may take part in to receive their required qualifications. Please visist their website here for the list of available clinics: https://ehockey.hockeycanada.ca/ehockey/cliniclist.aspx?oid=10

All new coaches (without prior certification) and any who may require Development I as part of the new qualifications structure listed above, are encouraged to take part in a Development I level clinic. Note: this clinic is also the recommneded clinic for KGHA house league coaches. The KGHA will not be hosting a recreational level "coach stream" course as we encourage all coaches to take this more advanced training in order to have a higher level of qualification for current and future KGHA coaching ambitions.
