Lady Sens emerge from opening weekend with 3 of 4 PWHL points

2017-09-11

The Junior Lady Sens fell just shy of a storybook weekend, surrendering a 2-0 lead and settling for a 2-2 tie with Mississauga Sept. 10 at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex.

With Friday's exhibition 3-0 win over Carleton University, and a 3-2 overtime win against Whitby in Saturday's Provincial Women's Hockey League opener, the Lady Sens were poised for an almost perfect weekend.

However, the Lady Sens began a parade to the penalty box in the second period of Sunday's tilt, giving life back to the Chiefs. Ottawa gave up a power play goal late in the second period while two players short, and struggled afterwards to regain the form they showed early in the game.

In fact, Mississauga outshot Ottawa 11-2 in the third period, and 27-23 overall. The Lady Sens did come out stronger for the scoreless five-minute overtime, outshooting the Chiefs 4-2.

Left winger Morgan Cutts opened the scoring for the Sens, just 52 seconds into the game, tipping in a point shot from Sydney Lyndon. Fiona Milligan picked up the other helper on the play.

In the second period, Emma Michalicka burst down the left wing boards to collect a loose puck, cut to the net and stopped sharply in front of netminder Serena Vilde, and with poise and patience tucked the puck in behind the Chief goalie when she came off the post. Cutts and Meara Ryan drew assists on the goal.

In her first PWHL start, Melika Florent weathered the third period storm, and turned aside 25 shots in total, to help earn the tie for Ottawa.

With three points of the available four points secured on the weekend, the Lady Sens head to the Stoney Creek Showcase tournament for the weekend of Sept. 15-17.
