2017-04-11
The Kanata Girls Hockey Association is pleased to announce that the Kanata Rangers Bantam AA leadership team for the 2017-18 season will consist of Sami Evelyn as head coach and Bill Courchaine as general manager.
Sami Evelyn - Head Coach. Sami Evelyn will continue in the role of Bantam AA head coach after a successful 2016-17 season,
Evelyn will be a head coach in the competitive programme of the KGHA for her fifth consecutive season. She is excited to coach the top girls in Kanata at the Bantam level and is looking forward to inspiring good hockey habits and incorporating level two skills (respect, responsibility, accountability, and teamwork) into their everyday hockey routines. Evelyn is a non-parent coach with a distinguished background in hockey. Evelyn played minor hockey in the Ottawa area for both the NMHA and the NCCP competitive programmes. She completed her minor hockey career by playing for four years at the Intermediate AA level in the PWHL (now the Lady Sens). Evelyn also competed with Team Ontario U18 for three years, winning two national championships. She went on the play hockey at the NCAA D1 level, on a full ride scholarship to the University of Connecticut. She was named team MVP and team Captain of the UCONN Huskies before her graduation in 2012; she earned her degree in Civil Engineering.
Evelyn's teams have enjoyed three appearances at ODWHA Championship day - coming away with two championships.
Bill Courchaine - General Manager. Courchaine has been coaching with the KGHA since the 2001-02 season and has a wealth of experience head coaching at both the Midget AA and Bantam AA levels. He has an extensive coaching resumé at high levels of both hockey and baseball with specialized experience in goalie instruction and has his Hockey Canada High Performance 1 coaching certification. Courchaine played minor hockey as a goalie in the Ottawa area, which lead to a scholarship opportunity to play college hockey in the U.S. Coucrhaine will act as general manager for both the Bantam AA & Midget AA teams - ensuring continuity between those two teams. Courchaine will be responsible for overseeing player development, selection, and movement within the affiliation program with the Lady Sens Intermediate AA team.
The Bantam AA team will be selected during the second half of April during the KGHA spring tryouts. Check the KGHA website for tryout details.
As one of the elite teams offered in the Kanata Rangers system, parents and players can expect the Bantam AA Rangers team to be active 4-5 times a week with games, practices, on-ice and off-ice skills sessions. This team will also do six tournaments over the course of the season including three or four out-of-town tournaments and will compete in the provincial playdown series to try and earn a spot in the Provincials.
The KGHA is considering the possibility of the Bantam AA team playing within the Lady Sens program. A decision on that option will follow soon.
